Personal Safety And Security Tips

Never trust a doorway chain lock.

Whether in a hotel or in your home, never rely upon door string locks for safety. Even amateurs can often undermine them in moments.

Reveal sensitive information (when appropriate) on outbound calls, not inbound calls.

Never disclose sensitive information on calls that were placed to you. If you get a call from your credit card issuer or lender regarding possible fraud on your account, for example, hang up and call back in the official telephone number published on the back of the appropriate card. Never offer information to someone who called you - that party may not be who he or she claims to be.

Enable remote wipe on your smartphone.

If it's stolen, you wish to be sure that any sensitive info on your phone - from which, as an instance, your children's programs may be able to be determined - is eradicated.

Cover cameras.

Cover the cameras in smartphones, notebooks, tablets, smart televisions, etc. when you wish to be certain it's not possible for them to record you. Left uncovered, they can record you without your knowing. Bear in mind that microphones may also be activated by malware.

In emergency situations use flashlights for light - candles.

Don't use candles for light during power failures brought on by wind-related weather states (e.g., hurricanes) until after the adverse weather has passed. Besides the simple fact that candles may be dangerous in general (especially if there are children in the home and/or if the candles are carried around when walking through the house), strong winds can hurl things through windows - creating situations where candles are vulnerable to end that can knock them over and start a dangerous fire.
